OFF SEASON event features some of the best of Philadelphia's avant-garde and
fringe performers presented in a cabaret/vaudeville setting. Featuring
dance, poetry, performance art and music, OFF SEASON is part of the Sedgwick
Cultural Center's PieceWorks Festival of art quilts
Theatre V will be the silent emcee for the evening as well as performing her
unique brand of physical comedy.
Stephanie Durann is an award-winning poet -- known for spoken word
performances that channel urban rhythms and rhymes spiked with her own
mile-wide streak of independence and individuality.
Anne-Marie Mulgrew and Dancers are well known for comic inventions and
arresting images. This company has appeared at dozens of venues from street
corners to avant-garde festivals, from Toronto's fFIDA to Philadelphia's
Fringe, and is known for its collaborations and site-specific work.
Michael Steffen's book, No Good At Sea, offers poems that do not "hide in the
basement," and are "as sharp as the edge between bitter and sweet." As an
OFF SEASON special attraction, one of Michael's poems will be "set to dance"
by Anne-Marie Mulgrew and Dancers.
Tomas Dura, flamenco dancer and choreographer, will appear as Carlos the
Crazy Cripple (the man who wanted to fly) in monologue and dance, attempting
some of the fastest and most intricate footwork ever seen in a pair of
flamenco boots.
Maralyn Lois Polak is a poet and journalist whose work runs thick with humor
and satire. She will perform her work, Temptations of the Flesh/Love Magic:
The Chocolate Chronicles, a dialogue between two long-distance lovers who
communicate via chocolate and the senses.
P3: People Percussion Project is an ensemble of artists who perform
high-energy dance-theatre pieces based on the art of fusing the body and the
environment to create a percussion instrument.
The Method and Result, which at first glance appears to be duo with voice,
guitar and bass, taps into their "electronics box" for sound samples of
everything from caves to office supplies to create a multi-layered musical
environment.
